THE PERSONAL IMPACT
Is life changing
The impacts of SENDism are not immediately visible. Misunderstanding, pressure to adapt and environments built around normative expectations can create hidden harm that affects wellbeing, identity, safety and everyday life.
VULNERABILITY DIFFERENCES
SEND does not end at 18; these are lifelong conditions and can carry lifelong challenges
vulnerability is often misunderstood.
Neurodivergents often see the world differently in how
they read social cues, assess risk, trust others or interpret situations. This can increase exposure to harm, even when the individual appears capable or independent. The transition into adulthood can be particularly risky without
the appropriate support or the risk awareness and understanding needed to navigate complex decisions safely.
vulnerability increases the risk of:
not managing health, safety or basic needs
involvement in harmful or criminal situations
financial vulnerability or debt
exploitation or manipulation
unsafe relationships
substance misuse
INTERSECTIONALITY DIFFERENCES
For some individuals, SENDism comes with additional discrimination.
It intersects with other aspects of identity — including race, gender and socio-economic background.
This can lead to increased misinterpretation, harsher judgement and unequal treatment. The same behaviours are often viewed differently depending on who the individual is, resulting in disproportionate outcomes.
These overlapping experiences can deepen disadvantage further and make support even harder to access.
SENSORY DIFFERENCES
internal experiences misunderstood
Neurodivergent individuals commonly experience hyper- or hypo-sensitivity to their senses. This results in either heightened or reduced sensory responses. Responses to noise, light, environmental or physical sensations can be overwhelming or unnoticed when needed. Internal signals such as hunger, thirst, pain or distress may also be difficult to recognise or interpret.
this increases the risk of
environments that worsen wellbeing
inappropriate or harmful advice
delayed recognition of distress
sudden escalation to crisis point
physical health issues
Without recognition or understanding, support cannot be accurate and harm can follow.
